Though strong for the encounter

tonight, I go to sleep sad.

once too stubborn to break

focusing on what made me mad.

As the stillness of the night deepens

so does the ache within my heart

baffled by the tragedy

of being torn apart

from my sister

By my sister

nothing but a burden

that does not sway her way

I dare to stand my ground

all to her dismay

Not an ounce of compassion

or even empathy

Yet never in the wrong

she will ever be

Hence the sadness that weighs

down with me on my pillow

I’ve reached my time

to leave her behind

it is time to go

… though…

she left long ago.

Embrace the suck. Wise words spoken to me while doing Trigger Point therapy on a client (I’m a massage therapist). Words that can be applied to a variety of situations in daily life. Words that can initiate an attitude adjustment and change the course of how we perceive the world.

Trigger point therapy can be a rather intense bodywork modality to experience. I’ve had it and know I need it more often than I get it. They are basically knots in the muscle that cause a string of radiating symptoms that can mimic conditions like sciatica, carpel tunnel syndrome, or…

“I have a real fear of losing you and my son if we travel South. What if they take you away?” Words from my white partner (father of my two children) as we plan an extended road trip to visit the National Parks. My two-year-old son and I share my brown complexion, brown hair and brown eyes. My five-year-old and his father share his white complexion, blond hair and green/blue eyes. I am half Tlingit Indian and a quarter Yup’ik Eskimo and have always been proud of my Alaska Native Heritage and brown skin. Now the very thing I am…

I find myself restless this morning. Though I have had very little sleep trying to accommodate my three week old baby and getting my three year old son to bed late last night; a fairly brutal combination as far as sleep goes but glorious in all other aspects of life. It’s not just that I have gotten on cycle of nursing, burping, changing, burping some more, almost falling asleep before the baby starts fussing again and then doing it all over again. I really wish I could just pass out when the time allows. But now I am about an…

It can be extremely tricky navigating the obstacles of a relationship with someone whom you’ve been infatuated with from your first moment of interaction. No, I’m not talking about the lust and butterflies you get with your “First Love” or with a first kiss or brand new and exciting relationship. Don’t get me wrong, I’m all for those butterflies and that high of devotion you feel with a lover. I’m speaking of a totally different (note I didn’t say higher) level of love and devotion.

I’m talking about the magnificent, mighty and sometimes seemingly unfair love a mother has for…
